Narjahanam is a folk oriental black death metal band coming from the Kingdom of Bahrain! It is one of the few metal bands originating from this small island country, which is situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. They were founded in 2004 by Mardus and joined by Busac in 2005, who remain their only two members since then. They released their debut album “Undama Tath’hur Al Shams Mn Al Gharb” in 2007 via the Russian label Haarbn Productions. Now, 6 years later they return with an amazing second full-length album, entitled “Wa Ma Khufiya Kana A’atham“, released again by Haarbn.
Since their first work, Narjahanam revealed a very personal sound, deeply influenced by their local traditional music. And while their debut had a more brutal death metal oriented underground sound, “Wa Ma Khufiya Kana A’atham” has a much more melodic technical and mainstream approach. I was surprised very pleasantly will the overall improvement in the quality of their music, since their new sound is much closer to my personal preferences. They play folk symphonic black/death metal with a killer production and a very balanced mature sound. Their music is totally based on Arabian and Middle-Eastern traditional music; I think it’s not extreme metal with folk elements, but rather folk oriental music with extreme metal orchestrations. The band has combined these two music “worlds” perfectly; in my opinion it is one of the best experiments of this kind, if not the best!!! Powerful, melodic and technical guitars are followed by epic synths and several traditional instruments that form a unique, almost symphonic, oriental layer. There are also some wonderful instrumental soundtrack-like passages and several progressive extreme metal elements that fit perfectly with the album’s atmosphere. Mardus vocals are brutal black death metal screams, closer to death metal growls. I’d like to listen to some traditional clean singing too. Maybe in the future. “Wa Ma Khufiya Kana A’atham” includes 11 tracks, moving from mid to fast tempo, with a total duration of 58 minutes. Song titles and lyrics are all in their native language and they are absent from the booklet, so there is not much info about the lyrical concept.
“Wa Ma Khufiya Kana A’atham” is a very impressive album in my opinion, a great recommendation for those who like the fusion of oriental music with extreme metal. Narjahanam delayed many years to make their second step, but the wait was totally worth it! For me it was one of the best folk metal albums in 2013. “Wa Ma Khufiya Kana A’atham” is released by Haarbn Productions in standard jewel case CD edition with a very beautiful 16-page booklet. Artwork and cover concept is by Mardus and photos by Glitzern Photography. I advise you to visit their official pages below and discover their amazing music!
