Pagan black metallers Valknacht from Québec of Canada are back with their new full-length album, 3 years after the amazing “Chants de Guerre“. The band was formed in 2005 by Thorleïf, driven by the desire to express his passion of history through music. Until the summer of 2008 he gathered a complete line-up and next year the band released the demo “When the Might of the Storm Becomes Mine” by the label Les Productions Hérétiques. In 2011 it was the time for the first full-length album of the band “Chants de Guerre“, out via CDMR. And finally, on 11th of March 2014, their new album “Le Sacrifice d’Ymir” was released by PRC Music.
Valknacht continue in the style of their previous effort, trying to perfect their sound even more. They have a really powerful and solid production and this is their darker and more aggressive work so far. Their music can be described in general as pagan heathen black metal, with a very epic atmosphere and many folk touches. The work in the guitars is once again amazing! Fast melodic riffs and epic bombastic lead guitars are combined with discreet, yet grandiose, cinematic synths in a very tight inseparable result! Acoustic guitars and several folk instruments, mostly flutes, are used either to enrich their orchestrations, adding an almost symphonic touch to them, or to offer some more quiet acoustic passages. Thorleïf’s vocals move once again exclusively in the brutal side, with really expressive pagan black metal screams, in perfect harmony with their music. “Le Sacrifice d’Ymir” includes 7 songs, most of them quite long, plus an intro with a total album duration of almost 58 minutes. Their compositions move between mid and fast tempo, changing from typical pagan black metal to epic death black and folk black metal. It’s not easy to pick any song as favorite, since all of them are of highest level. There are so many wonderful melodies in each composition, making their songs very interesting, without losing anything from their powerful aggressive sound! This time the band sings only in Canadian French, unlike their previous works, where half of the songs are in English.
Without any significant changes compared to its predecessor, “Le Sacrifice d’Ymir” is a step forward for the band. Valknacht seem now more mature, with a better and more professional sound and a very solid song-writing. Fans of pagan epic folk black metal don’t hesitate at all; this is a top quality album! “Le Sacrifice d’Ymir” is released via the Canadian label PRC Music in two different editions. Except for the standard jewel case edition, it also comes in a limited to 250 hand numbered copies A5 digipak edition. Both editions include a 12-page booklet with the lyrics and the epic cover artwork by Kris Verwimp.
