Zaklon is a well hidden treasure coming from the Belarusian underground black metal scene. They were formed back in 1999 by their only member Temnarod and they released 4 demos between 2004 and 2006. Luckily enough Possession Productions decided to release their debut album in 2010, so I got at my hands this really beautiful album.
“Услед Змёрзламу Сонцу” is a typical example of pagan underground black metal. There are 10 songs in the album (with a total duration of 67 minutes), all of them moving in mid-tempo with melodic atmospheric riffs and screaming vocals. There are also a few synths and acoustic instruments, but mostly in the intros or outros of some songs, so the main parts of the album remain synth-free. Their production and overall sound is definitely raw black metal, but Zaklon manage to sound very epic and atmospheric, thanks to their amazing guitar melodies. Of course don’t expect to listen to something you’ve never heard before, but be prepared to listen to a very well played album. Their music sounds “honest”, pure and emotional in my ears and that’s what counts the most. It creates a melancholic, nostalgic feeling, sometimes overflowing with pagan nature-inspired mood and other times full of bitterness and aggression. As expected, all lyrics are in Temnarod’s native language and they are in the booklet if you speak Belarusian…
Zaklon was a very pleasant surprise for me. With its simplicity and directness “Услед Змёрзламу Сонцу” reminded me why this genre has still so much to give… I recommend it to all fans of pagan underground black metal, especially the first 2 songs that have a more folk approach, with each of them lasting for more than 10 minutes! The album is released by Possession Productions, so with a little effort isn’t that hard to find. Unluckily I couldn’t find any link with samples…
