TWILIGHTFALL – The Energy of Soul

TWILIGHTFALL - The Energy of Soul

Origin: Ukraine
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Label: Svarga Music
Year: 2014

Twilightfall is a new Ukrainian metal band from Kharkov, formed in 2010 and “The Energy of Soul” is their debut full-length album and their only release so far. And while the band is relatively new, its founder Wortherax is one of the veterans of the Ukrainian metal scene. Back in 1993 he was guitarist of Suppuration, the death metal band that later evolved to Nokturnal Mortum. He was one of the starting members of Nokturnal Mortum and participated in their 3 first demos, the legendary “Twilightfall“, “Black Clouds over Slavonic Lands” and “Lunar Poetry“. He left the band in 1996 and until 2003 he remained musically inactive. Then, as guest musician he recorded guitars in several albums of bands like Khors and Munruthel amongst others. Wortherax finally decided to start his own band, taking over guitars and vocals. Joined by 3 more members, Twilightfall came into life in 2010 and their debut album was released on August 11, 2014 via the Ukrainian label Svarga Music.

No matter how many times I listen to this album, I find it really hard to categorize it, or put it under any label. They are “officially” described as melodic death thrash metal, but that’s not enough to describe their music. What is certain however, is that Twilightfall have a perfect crystal clear sound with an absolutely professional flawless production, really impressive! “The Energy of Soul” includes 7 songs and its total duration is almost 39 minutes. Wortherax is involved with metal and rock music since 1981, even during his school years. He has moved from rock to metal, death metal, black metal, pagan metal and many other genres all these years and it’s obvious that all of these genres have influenced him more or less. I actually see this release as an all-metal album, defying the various sub-genres. “The Energy of Soul” is not one of these works that move from one genre to another. Wortherax tries to absorb elements from his different musical influences, merging them all into a new powerful metal style. Maybe the core of his music is melodic death metal, but there are many influences from thrash metal, especially in the rhythmic guitar riffs, elements from melodic epic black metal and from heavy / power metal with wonderful technical guitar solos, influences from symphonic metal, classical music or rock ballads, all combined as one in the compositions. Guitars, bass, drums and synths are equally dominant in their sound in perfect balance with Wortherax’s brutal vocals that move between black and death metal growls. All lyrics are in English and as the album title says, they spring from the energy of their creator’s soul…

The Energy of Soul” is a remarkable debut album, that totally reflects the musical maturity and professionalism of the its band members. Twilightfall is a new band, but the experience of its musicians is more than evident throughout the whole album. If you are a fan of melodic technical metal with harsh vocals, they are a great recommendation. In their case the term “melodic” has nothing to do with easy catchy refrains or cheesy synths. Their melodies are coming out of the quality of their compositions and from the skillful technical playing of each instrument, be it guitars or synths that take the lead, according the demands of every song. “The Energy of Soul” is released via Svarga Music in a standard jewel-case edition CD, including a 12-page booklet with all the lyrics. The beautiful layout design is by Al.Ex {Mayhem Design}. You can visit their official pages below for more details and sound samples.
