Russian dramatic metal band Wizardmask from Novosibirsk, a city is located in the southwestern part of Siberia, has recently released its new work. This duo was formed back in 2009 by Sergey Amelchenko (composition, music, guitars) and Svetlana Diva Amelchenko (concept, lyrics, vocals). They remain the only permanent members of the band, using several guest musicians in their albums. Wizardmask managed to release their debut full-length album “Карнавал Иллюзий” in 2012, after a lot of work. Their second album, entitled “Песнь Воина” was out at first digitally on December 31st 2014 and a few months later it was self-released by the band in CD edition.
The band uses the term “dramatic metal” to define its music, based on the theatrical aesthetic of the sound and their image. They play a very interesting mixture of female fronted symphonic Gothic metal, progressive metal and atmospheric rock, with many theatrical / operatic elements in their sound. Sergey does a wonderful job in the compositions and he manages to balance the dominant role of their symphonic synths and classical instruments with the heavy, technical and melodic sound of his guitars. Wizardmask have a crystal clear sound, with very rich and variable orchestrations and a really powerful professional production. Despite the extended use of synths, their music doesn’t sound overloaded at all; on the contrary ”Песнь Воина” is a quite easy to listen album, thanks to its ever-changing compositions that move between many different moods and styles. From atmospheric symphonic theatrical music, to technical progressive metal and everything in between. Of course in this symphonic metal genre that Wizardmask choose to “serve”, one of the most important factors is the female vocals. Luckily for them, but mostly for us, Svetlana is an amazing and talented singer. Her voice is melodic, expressive, powerful and sensitive at the same time, but above all she is completely correct in everything she sings! She moves easily from operatic style, to ethereal singing and various metal vocals, even with epic and folk “oriental” touches. Few guest operatic male vocals add even more diversity in the album. ”Песнь Воина” includes 8 songs with a total duration of almost 37 minutes. The album title translates to “Song of the Warrior” and all of its lyrics are in Russian, speaking about epic fantasy stories of soldiers, wars and long wanderings…
Wizardmask is a great band, recommended to fans of melodic symphonic progressive female fronted metal. “Песнь Воина” is a decent work, with a kick-ass sound and quality music, like the brilliant melodic ballad “Молитва“, my favorite track of the album. Apart from the digital formats, it is also released in a standard jewel-case edition CD, available directly by the band. It comes with an 8-page booklet, including all the lyrics. Svetlana Diva, together with Denis Poteryaev is responsible for the concept of the band costumes and image. She also contributed to the design of the album artwork.
