Australian melodic black metallers Atra Vetosus have recently released their debut album. They come from Tasmania and they were formed in 2011 as a two-member band by Josh “Slikver” Young (also in Astral Winter) and Thorodan. In the end of the same year they released the demo “A Palace Shrouded in Emptiness” via Immortal Frost Productions. After that, they got a full line-up and Josh Young started composing the band’s debut album. Finally on March 2013 “Voices from the Eternal Night” was released by the same label, Immortal Frost.
Atra Vetosus play melodic black metal and unlike most bands of the genre, their melodies are based on the guitars, which have a very sharp sound. In combination with their raw extreme screaming vocals, the band creates a really “acid” result for your ears! Of course they use synths, but their role is to accompany the lead melodic guitar lines, adding more depth in their compositions. There are totally 8 tracks in the album and 2 of them are rerecorded songs from the demo. “Voices from the Eternal Night” lasts for a little over 50 minutes, being at quite fast tempo most of the time. Some calmer parts with acoustic guitars are more than welcome, since they serve as breaks between their aggressive sound and at the same time enrich the atmosphere of the album. With the exceptions of few clean male vocals by guest singer Sam Dishington on 2 songs, all other vocals by Slikver and Thorodan are very fierce black metal searing screams. There are nice melodies and riffs in the guitars, but everything sounds a bit over-distorted, at least for my personal taste. All of their lyrics are written by Josh “Thorodan” Gee, dealing with dark nocturnal epic themes.
I believe that Atra Vetosus is a nice recommendation to fans of raw melodic black metal and “Voices from the Eternal Night” is a decent debut album with many nice moments. It is released by Immortal Frost Productions in jewel case edition, limited to 500 copies. The 12-page booklet is illustrated by Antonio Jimenez and includes all the lyrics. In their official pages you can find more info and listen to their songs.
