FIMBULTYR – Gryende Tidevarv

FIMBULTYR - Gryende Tidevarv

Fimbultyr is a new band coming from Sweden playing black / death Viking metal. Formed in 2005 they released the demo “Ändlösa Frågor” in 2006, whose most songs are rerecorded and put together with new ones for their debut “Gryende Tidevarv” just released by Unexploded Records.

They play typical Viking black metal with many epic death metal elements too. They have a very powerful sound and production, where guitars and black/death vocals have the leading role. There are also many Read more…

ARATHORN – Treue und Verrat

ARATHORN – Treue und Verrat

Do you remember Arathorn? Not Tolkien’s character, but the German folk black metal band that released back in 1997 the amazing debut “Niemals Krönender als Was Einst War”. After that album the 3 members of the band split up and the band seemed dead for many years! But Sköll (one of the band’s member) decided that Arathorn should be revived. So in 2004 he recorded and released a demo, and now in 2008 Arathorn’s second album, 11 years Read more…

ANDRAS – Iron Way

ANDRAS – Iron Way

Epic pagan black metallers Andras are back 3 years after their previous effort “…of Old Wisdom”, the album that changed their sound. Their new work continues in the great style of this new Andras era…

The Germans offer us 45 minutes of very melodic well played majestic black metal, with  great variety in their sound. The voice of Ecthelion, even though he still reminds a lot of Vintersorg, is a trademark of the band’s new sound and he sings more Read more…

FOLKODIA – Odes From the Past

FOLKODIA – Odes From the Past

Folkodia is a new project formed in 2007, containing many musicians from different countries, including Greece, something like Folkearth (actually many members are common in both bands). So, someone could ask if there are any differences between the two bands. Well, there are and for my taste I prefer Folkodia.

The basic composers are Simon Müller from Excelsis and Loki (also in Folkearth), while all the lyrics are written mainly by Marios Koutsoukos. Their music is epic folk Viking metal, Read more…

THYRFING – Hels Vite

THYRFING – Hels Vite

The anticipation in listening to a new Thyrfing album is always great for me! Thyrfing’s “Valdr Galga” was actually the first album of Viking black metal I’ve ever listened to it and it really dragged me to this genre. So together with “Urkraft” these two are in my favourites! “Vansinnesvisor” in 2002 and “Farsotstider” in 2005 were less Viking oriented (good albums, but I didn’t like them like their predecessors) and now comes this new album, the 6th in the Read more…

THEUDHO – Cult of Wuotan

THEUDHO – Cult of Wuotan

Theudho is an epic pagan black metal band from Belgium formed back in 2002. In 2004 they released their first cd “Treachery”, in 2006 the cd “The Völsunga Saga” and now in 2008 they return with their third album “Cult of Wuotan”. While their debut was a little unbalanced, with some good songs and some indifferent, their sophomore effort was much better, still searching though for an identity. This new album however, takes them to the next step… Read more…

SVARTAHRID – Malicious Pride

SVARTAHRID - Malicious Pride

The new album of Svartahrid is released. The first step to their comeback was taken last year with “Sadness and Wrath” and now their fourth work is available. There are no surprises in the music path they continue to follow, or in their overall sound, but the improvements in their composition and production quality are obvious!

The Norwegian trio presents 48 minutes of aggressive epic norge black metal. The tempo is at mid and high speed most of the time, Read more…

FIMBULVET – Der Ruf in Goldene Hallen

FIMBULVET – Der Ruf in Goldene Hallen

A surprisingly beautiful album for fans of epic pagan black metal comes from the Germans Fimbulvet. Another band from Thuringia (that is creating a very remarkable stage) Fimbulvet was founded in 2003. After their demo “Gjallarhorn” in 2004, they released their debut “Ewiger Winter” in 2006. So they return in 2008 with their second and much improved album “Der Ruf in Goldene Hallen”.

Melodic heathen black metal is what Fimbulvet offer us, and they are really good at it! Read more…
