Heidra is a Danish epic black death metal band that was formed in 2006 in Copenhagen. Since their first steps they had a melodic, almost symphonic, approach in their music and it was 2008 when they self-released their first demo “The Saga“. In 2009 they recorded their second demo “Northern Tales“, but it was released in 2011. In the beginning of 2012 they started recording their debut EP, first time in a professional studio and in Read more…
Finland’s epic folk metallers Ensiferum are back with their 5th full-length album “Unsung Heroes“. 17 years after their creation they’ve become one of the leading acts in the genre and they are already among the basic influences of many younger bands. And while their previous album “From Afar” was a typical Ensiferum album, well I can’t say the same for this one…
The album begins with a melodic instrumental intro, which actually reveals the intentions of Read more…
A new band arises from the blooming Canadian extreme metal scene. Valfreya were formed just in 2009 by their front-woman and main composer Crook. They are from Montreal and on 2010 they self-released the EP “First Chronicles”. On 2012 they signed on Maple Metal Records, who released their debut full-length “Path to Eternity” on February.
Their music is often described as folk extreme Viking metal, but I believe it’s more precise to call them an epic Read more…
Nordheim is a new folk black metal band, coming from Québec, Canada. They were formed in 2006 and in 2009 they released a 3 song demo. In 2010 their debut full-length “Lost in the North” was self-released, but soon sold out! In 2011 they inked a deal with the Canadian label Maple Metal Records, who in the end of the same year re-released their debut album.
Their music can be described as extreme Viking metal with folk black Read more…
Hailing from the Netherlands, Myrkvar return with their second full-length album. This folk Viking black metal band was born in 2004, when they also released their first demo. They signed a contract with the Belgian label Shiver Records, who released their very interesting debut album “Als Een Woeste Horde” in 2008. On April 2012, four years after the debut, Shiver Records presents the second full-length of Myrkvar, entitled “As En Bloed”.
Compared to their first album Read more…
Ben Corkhill is back with the second album of his personal project Oakenshield. Ben comes from Yorkshire, United Kingdom and founded the band back in 2004 under the name Nifelheim. In 2007, and after 2 demos, he changed the name of his band into Oakenshield. In 2008 Einheit Produktionen released the debut album “Gylfaginning”, a surprising good album! On February 27th 2012 his second offering “Legacy” is out, again by Einheit.
Oakenshield’s music falls into the Read more…
Forefather is well known in the viking / epic pagan metal circles. Brothers Athelstan and Wulfstan formed them back in 1997 and since then they remain the only members of Forefather. Coming from Surrey in England, they released their debut “Deep into Time” in 1999 introducing a very personal sound. The second album “The Fighting Man” was out in 2000 by their own label Angelisc and they started to grow in popularity. They remained faithful to Read more…
Einherjer need no introduction. This Norwegian band was formed back in 1993 and was one of the pioneers of viking metal. In their first works they had some black metal influences, which slowly disappeared with the passing of time. With the albums “Norwegian Native Art” in 2000 and “Blot” in 2003 (their best album in my opinion) Einherjer seemed to have found a more solid ground, building a very unique, personal and characteristic sound, but in Read more…
