EXULTET – I Soldati della Croce

EXULTET – I Soldati della Croce

Exulted happens to be one of the bands that I watched since its beginning. So it’s nice for me to see that after some great demos they finally released one of their works with a label. This Italian band from Sicily began in 2003 by Farz (vocals, guitars, bass, synths) and Argoth (drums). They made 3 full-length demos before “I Soldati della Croce” that was self-released as a promo in 2010, before its official re-release from Sullen Records, Read more…

SHANGREN – Warriors of Devastation

SHANGREN – Warriors of Devastation

Folk metal (especially in its most extreme expressions) has been my favorite genre for years now and I always want to listen to bands who bring music from different cultures to their sound. So far many bands from the weirdest places of the world have come to my attention, but I had never come upon a band who experiments with folk Chinese or native African music. This is weird if you take into consideration the rich and very strong traditional Read more…

EFTWYRD – Eftwyrd

EFTWYRD – Eftwyrd

Eftwyrd is a new band that was formed after the folk metal band Munarheim split-up in 2009. Two of its members (Sebastian Braun: music, guitars, vocals and David Vardeh: violin, bass) decided to continue with this new band and I have to thank them both for their music and for sending me this beautiful self-released digipak for review. Their same-titled debut effort is an EP that lasts just over 18 minutes, but it’s more than enough to understand their music. Read more…

DIAMOND EYED PRINCESS – Korlgueläal

DIAMOND EYED PRINCESS – Korlgueläal

Some of you may remember the band with this unusual name from their debut album “Pagan Rite” back in 2001. Actually it was the first and only album of this French band that was formed in 1997. Back then they offered us a very good release of underground folk black metal with a very medieval touch. They used a lot of traditional instruments and they had many instrumental folk parts. Nine years later they finally release their new Read more…

MELECHESH – The Epigenesis

MELECHESH – The Epigenesis

The founders of Mesopotamian black metal are back with their fifth full-length album. Through the years this band has created a “good” name, so they don’t need any introduction. The term black metal isn’t the best to describe them anymore, since the band is constantly changing its style after the second album “Djinn”. They now have a more mainstream sound with a thrash and death metal approach. Of course there are still some black metal elements in their Read more…

SIRIN – Moja Otčina / My Fatherland

SIRIN – My Fatherland

Sirin is another one-man band that comes from Slovakia and is a member of U.B.M.R. (Underground Black Metal Resistance) along with Perterricrepus, Karpathia, Concubia Nocte, Igric and Warxath, all of them from Slovakia. SturmWolf formed this band in 2006 and he composes and plays everything since then (he is also session member on Karpathia). In 2006 Sirin released the debut album “The Dawn of Freedom” and in 2007 the very limited split album “Vznesenej Krvi ZrodenyRead more…

METALMESSAGE – V

METAL MESSAGE - V

I can’t say that I am a big fan of compilations. Most of them contain one or two decent songs and the rest are crap. They also are too general, without focusing on a specific genre, but mainly promoting a label’s material. But MetalMessage is a totally different case and that’s the main reason I review it. Markus Eck, who is also behind the webzine MetalMessage, has done a respectful work gathering 13 songs from bands all over the world Read more…

FINNTROLL – Nifelvind

FINNTROLL – Nifelvind

Finntroll are back with their latest studio album, their fifth full-length in the thirteen years of their existence. This Finnish band is one of the biggest names in the folk metal scene, with a very personal sound and that’s why they are in the ranks of Century Media. I was really amazed by their first two albums, especially “Jaktens Tid” and I found their happy humppa metal very entertaining and original. On the other hand, this “darker” sound Read more…
