“Urzeitgeist” is the new album of Alpine black metal band Rauhnåcht from Untersberg, Austria. Stefan Traunmüller (also in Golden Dawn, Wallachia and several other bands in the past) formed them in 2010 as his solo project. His debut album “Vorweltschweigen” was released the same year, while in 2012 he released 2 EPs (one of them is a teaser to their new album) and one split EP with Sturmpercht. Finally in the spring of 2014 his second full-length album “Urzeitgeist” was released via Dutch label Hammerheart Records.
Rauhnåcht had already “won” me with their previous releases, thanks to the beauty and quality of their music, so I was more than excited about their new effort. Well, it didn’t took more than 5 seconds, until I listen to the main melodic orchestration of the opening track “Einsam ist’s, Durch’s Moor zu Geh’n” and a smile was painted on my face. Excellent atmospheric pagan black metal, with the ideal sound for the genre, at least for my taste. The band’s music is clearly nature-based and the whole album evokes a unique mystic atmosphere inspired by the Alpine landscape. Stefan has an amazing sense of rhythm in his compositions and in my opinion this is the secret to his great songs. He moves easily from fast paced black metal to more atmospheric mid tempo parts, enriching his sound often with acoustic and folk elements, or a few ambient passages.
There are 7 quite long tracks in the album plus a bonus track (cover of Burzum’s “Glemselens Elv” ) with a total album duration over 63 minutes. Wonderful black metal guitars riffs, both rhythmic and melodic, are clearly dominating his sound. Enchanting acoustic guitars, local Alpine instruments, field recordings and effects (ever-present in the background) help him built an even stronger solid atmosphere. The clever use of melodic (and at times quite catchy) synths makes the whole result even more enjoyable, without removing anything from the direct raw nature of the music. Stefan’s vocals are mostly emotional black metal screams, with a few clean parts in complete harmony with the music. Lyrics are in his native language, dealing with nature related themes and local myths…
“Urzeitgeist” is another wonderful work from Rauhnåcht, totally recommended to fans of dark atmospheric nature-inspired black metal. It is a very mature and balanced album, with excellent sound and production. It is released via Hammerheart Records in a 6-panel digipak, including all lyrics. The amazing album artwork is once again by Kogaion Art, who managed to depict more than perfectly the atmosphere and essence of Rauhnåcht’s music.
